ERLC plan to support implementation based on regional needs and grant deliverables

Collaboration/Environmental Scan/Needs Assessment

  • Session feedback and ongoing needs assessment.
  • ERLC board.
  • ATA Specialist Council – MCATA president participation on mathematics advisory committee.
  • ERLC mathematics advisory committee ongoing consultation.
  • Consultation with key Alberta Education Lead Managers and Directors a minimum of twice during the year.

Practice/Goals

  • Alberta Education grant deliverables.
  • Key program elements of the Mathematics Program of Studies link back to needs assessment – specific to advisory committee direction.
  • Regional Goals specific to work of ERLC (i.e. Program of Studies, Instruction and Assessment) (see image).

Identify Possible Strategies

  • ERLC Learning Opportunities – Core sessions of Alberta Education modules for elementary as well as junior high.
  • PD resources on specific topic areas are to be identified and developed as needed. (e.g., assessment).
  • ERLC will work with publishers and other stakeholders such as the U of A in the planning and development of program offerings to ensure the ERLC region has access to current research and knowledgeable speakers.
  • Districts identify teacher leaders, “curriculum facilitators” to develop PD Leadership capacity in relation to support for mathematics implementation.  This will include support for release time to attend sessions as well as an expectation for tracking how facilitators are able to share their learning in their district.  Some examples of leadership sessions include those by Anne Davies, Joellen Killion and Robin Fogerty.
  • Math regional team is based on secondment contracts with EPS and Greater St. Albert Catholic for a total of 1.25 FTE. consultant time.  The regional team members provide support to districts in the form of “district days”. This approach assists in getting professional development closer to the district.

Action Plan and Measures

  • Develop and deliver programs during 2008-2009 that are responsive and flexible and that offer a variety of approaches and opportunities which would include provision for such activities as capacity building, familiarity with the program of studies.  See Math theme at www.erlc.ca.
  • Use program feedback form as primary measure.
  • Sessions are attended.

Implement Action Plan

  • Budget of $431,000.00 as well as infrastructure support provided from the grant.
  • Programs adapted as needed.

Summative Evaluation

  • Program feedback.
  • ERLC Board, District Contact, and Mathematics Advisory Committee feedback.
  • Evidence of changes in teacher KASAB (Knowledge, Attitude, Skill, Aspiration, Behaviour). Evidence to be gathered.
  • Summary report to Alberta Education.
Reflections on Implementation from members of the Mathematics Regional Team

Members of the Mathematics Regional Team reflected on what they had observed in their work with teachers, schools and districts throughout the ERLC region as evidence that mathematics implementation is occurring.

Reflections, feedback and suggestions from all sources is used in producing a plan that will complement and support the work going on in districts throughout the region.
