Teaching at the best of times is hard work.  There’s preparation, lesson delivery, formative assessments, summative assessments, staff meetings, clearing the paper jam in the photocopier…the list goes on.  It’s even harder when you are asked to evaluate the linguistic, strategic, socio-linguistic and discourse competencies of multilingual students when you’re not entirely certain what those competencies are about.

This three-part series will work to unpack some of the “mysteries” of ESL proficiency benchmarking as well as offer strategies that support language development for students adding English to their linguistic repertoire.

Each session is guided by the following questions:

Session 1:  How are the Alberta K-12 ESL Proficiency Benchmarks related to second language learning and used to guide instruction and assessment?

Session 2:  What steps are involved in evaluating the English language proficiency of multilingual students using the AB K-12 ESL Proficiency Benchmarks?

Session 3:  How can we create pathways for students to notice language and work towards becoming linguistically competent?
