The language enviroment is a univeral influence on second language acquisition.  This influence considers the context in which the learner accesses (both respectively and productively) the target language and the ways in which the language is used within those contexts.

This session will look at strategies central to creating the physical and cognitive spaces that make up a language-rich environment, and how the Alberta K-12 ESL Proficiency Benchmarks can be used to inform instruction.  The approaches and frameworks shared can be implemented by content area teachers across the secondary grade levels, and are not desinged specifically for linguistically and culturally diverse learners.  Instead, these approaches will benefit all learners as they develop their academic language proficiency, of which students who are adding English to their linguistic repertoire will benefit.

All learning opportunities with the ERLC regional team will focus on the Alberta Education and district priority areas.
