Karen Filewych has more than twenty years of educational experience as an elementary teacher and school administrator. She is currently an English Language Arts Consultant for Edmonton Catholic Schools. Her passion for literacy began as a young child with nightly bedtime stories and weekly trips to the library. In 2007, she pursued this passion further by completing her Master of Education degree in the area of literacy. Karen's first book - How Do I Get Them to Write? - was published by Pembroke Publishers in May of 2017. Her second book - Freewriting with Purpose - was published in January of 2019. Both books are practical guides for the teaching of writing and include lists of mentor texts for each area of study. Her website, www.wordschangeworlds.ca, highlights the power of words and provides teachers with regular book reviews and teaching ideas.

Back to class takes on a whole new meaning this fall. Students will experience a range of heightened emotions regardless of the scenario: a return to in-person learning, a hybrid model, or continued distance learning. Join Karen to explore how to:
- use writing to help build essential relationships with students
- foster a sense of well-being during challenging times
- create a stronger sense of self within students
Teachers will leave this session with practical ideas to support their students’ social and emotional learning as schools reopen for the 2020-21 school year.
