Could you use some help structuring your FSL class so that it is focused on effective practices that maximize student learning?

Despite working with the same Alberta nine year FSL Program of Studies (FSL POS), several factors greatly impact how FSL is taught around the province: Policies and regulations at the division level; teacher French proficiency and pedagogical backgrounds; time of instruction; in-person or virtual delivery; and access to resources to name a few. This webinar series’ mix of instruction and collegial sharing can support you no matter your FSL situation.

Attend any Session One FSL (October 14, 2020 OR January 19, 2021): Les essentiels during the year, then join Touch base Sessions for collaborative conversations with colleagues.

Session One FSL: Les essentiels (2 hrs)

Examine the essentials around curricular expectations, pedagogical approaches and assessment practices in FSL, and learn about:

  • The hidden ‘gap’ in the FSL POS that can unknowingly frustrate you and your students and how to bridge the gap.
  • Why teaching primarily through games, songs and exercises may engage students in the activity but not in significant learning.
  • Why we tend to teach FSL in thematic units when no one conducts their lives that way.
  • How to get out of the habit of teaching French in English.
  • Planning with a focus on doing in French and not on knowing French.

Touch Base Sessions (1 hr)

Collaborate with colleagues about FSL classroom practices that focus on les essentiels to share and receive practical ideas and advice. Topics could include:

  • engaging students,
  • looking at key resources,
  • establishing effective routines,
  • ways to brush up on your French,
  • planning for authentic communication,
  • working with parents and administrators,
  • developing a focused approach to planning,
  • information about professional learning opportunities, and
  • any other topics participants would like to discuss with FSL colleagues!

These sessions will be delivered in English. Participants are asked to bring their questions and ideas for teaching FSL to the sessions.
