“I think we come back to schools remembering their deep humanity; that it’s about people working with people; that things that maybe we push to the margins too easily are actually going to be central. Physical activity, fresh air, exercise, the creative power of the arts and other subjects, making things – all of these things are going to be more important.” (Geoff Barton, ASCL, 2020)
Regardless of how education will look, how do we begin in September? This session will focus on the routines and rigour needed to help our students transition back into the classroom and build their readiness for deep learning. Knowing what types of routines to use, and how to adapt them to a virtual classroom if necessary, will be required of all teachers. How do we move away from emergency pandemic teaching and return to teaching with the level of rigour expected under normal circumstances? Rigour comes from the challenge of student learning goals. (Thomas Guskey, 2020)
Practical ideas will be shared and discussed including:
- review of identifying essential learning outcomes
- how to create student learning goals with rigour in mind
- specific routines that promote active thinking and learning
- aligning learning goals, rigour and assessment
