Research on learning has conclusively shown students need to see the BIG PICTURE if they are to be able to make sense of their lessons, and to transfer their learning to other subject areas, issues, problems and real-world situations. (Wiggins & McTighe, 1998)
The necessity of knowing how to prioritize curricular outcomes is especially important now as schools are planning for re-entry in the fall and having to address the effect of inequitable access to learning opportunities due to school closures in the spring.
Choosing essential outcomes means that the context of learning will always be emphasized, and the focus will be on knowledge and skills that will be most valuable to students now and in the future. Participants will gain an understanding of:
- how to choose essential learning outcomes
- how to create learning goals for students
- possible next steps
