Recent studies (Fischer 2009 and Bruce, Flynn, & Moss 2012) have shown that spatial reasoning is an unacknowledged and neglected area of curriculum.
Top 5 reasons that we should care about spatial thinking when we plan, observe and assess math in our classrooms:
- Spatial and mathematical thinking are intimately linked
- Spatial reasoning can be improved
- Important predictor of achievement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)
- Currently an underserved area of mathematics
- Provides multiple entry points and equitable access to math
