Boosting Achievement: Reaching Students with Interrupted or Minimal Education Book Study

*Literacy 3-Day Series are intentionally designed to deepen your understanding in a focus area for literacy. Research indicates that the most effective professional occurs when the learning:

- is sustained over a duration to allow time to learn, practice, implement and reflect

- has opportunities for collaboration and feedback

- is applied towards action research in which teachers participate in a structured process of inquiry to improve or refine their instructional practice 

It is highly recommended that participants attend all three sessions in the series to fully engage in a cycle of action research towards developing a deeper understanding of how specific research-based pedagogical approaches can positively impact student learning.

This 3-day series is designed to build a cohort of educators who support English Language Learners who have limited formal education through a book study of Carol Salva’s Boosting Achievement-Reaching Students with Interrupted or Minimal Education. The benefits of being part of this book study cohort include opportunities to discuss, collaborate and share ideas and resources to help English language learners become active, engaged learners in the classroom. Book study discussions will be facilitated by ERLC’s literacy consultant Susan Woo. ESL consultant and author Carol Salva will join our conversation online on the last day of this professional learning series for an interactive Q and A session.

Prior to each meeting, participants will be expected to have read assigned readings from Carol Salva's book Boosting Achievement-Reaching Students with Interrupted or Minimal Education, which is included in the cost of registration. The Boosting Achievement book will be available for pick-up at the ERLC office one week prior to the Day 1 session. 

February 26th - Part I (Working with Students Who are SIFE) & Part II (Understanding Grit and Growth Mindset)

March 16th - Part III (Accelerating Language Development) & IV (Implementing a Practical Approach to Instruction) 

April 20th - Online Conversation with Carol Salva
