Research says that when we make math more visible, students can see relationships and see the math in action.  Visual first, then symbolic.  When we do this, we have something other than the answer to discuss, and we can check to see if strategies and answers make sense.  That is hard to do when all they have is a bunch of number to look at.

We will take a short look at:

  • Why we need kids to learn to think multiplicatively before we ask them to multiply and divide
  • Using quick images and doubling to move kids past one-to-onte counting and skip counting
  • Working with arrays and t-charts
  • How investigating change and constancy helps us see the math in action
