A lifelong learner, Noreen Holt, holds a Masters of Educational Studies from the University of Alberta, in addition to completing doctoral coursework. She has taught grade 7-12 students in a variety of subject areas, has worked as an instructional coach, and has facilitated professional development around the province. Recently, Noreen retired from teaching at RF Staples Secondary School in Westlock. Over her 33 years as a classroom teacher, she made a special effort to infuse elements of literacy and assessment into her instructional practice, particularly in her ELA 7 and 9 classes. Noreen believes teacher collaboration is a powerful way to improve student learning, and she continues to enjoy active participation in projects with former colleagues.

AllThe workshop model in secondary classrooms is based on the ideas of differentiation, student choice, engagement, and interest. In Reader’s Workshop, students are provided support to choose texts, time to read in class, and ways to share their understanding. This is an effective model for engaging students, and helping them grow as readers. In this session, learn how to implement a workshop model in your ELA classes and how it can either support or replace a whole-class novel study . Participants will discuss solutions to potential challenges, strategies for assessment, and titles of quality texts for adolescents.
