Pat Rivard is a National Trainer with the North American Center for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response (NACTATR). Pat recently transitioned from an 18 year career in Education where he served students and communities as a teacher, principal and 9 years in senior leadership in two school divisions in Alberta. In 2017 Pat was recognized for his leadership in VTRA protocol development with a National Award for his outstanding contributions in the advancement of VTRA practice demonstrating a tireless commitment towards providing safe and caring environments for students and community. Beyond his years of experience in Education, Pat is uniquely qualified to comprehend the complexities of multiagency collaboration being initially trained as a Social Worker. During the early part of his career, Pat worked in Child Welfare and subsequently had a two-year career as a family counsellor.
Pat is currently the training lead in North America’s largest urban Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA) initiative. With funding through Public Safety Canada, Pat is collaborating with the City of Toronto, Toronto Police Service and 100 other agencies in Toronto in support of their City-wide FOCUS program with a special emphasis on Violent Extremism. He is also consulting with NACTATR’s American operations in the development of their new “human assisted” software referred to as TACTIC which will assist multiagency VTRA teams to streamline their practice from initial screening to Stage One and Two Assessment and Interventions.
As well, Pat is an Alberta born Francophone whose entire career has been as a professional in the English sector. As such, he is NACTATR’s only bilingual trainer who has been training Level One and Two VTRA in both languages for the past three years. Recently, Pat has taken a lead with Francophone leaders from the New Brunswick Government for the development of enhanced VTRA Protocols and the streamlining of training and practice for both Anglophone and Francophone sectors.
