This Literacy 3-Day Series is intentionally designed to deepen your understanding in a focus area for literacy. Research indicates that the most effective professional occurs when the learning:

  • is sustained over a duration to allow time to learn, practice, implement and reflect
  • has opportunities for collaboration and feedback
  • is applied towards action research in which teachers participate in a structured process of inquiry to improve or refine their instructional practice

This series is intended for beginning teachers and for those who are new to teaching grades 7-12. It is planned to further teachers’ understanding of the foundational literacy principles that support classroom practices and reflective processes for secondary literacy instruction. We will explore how to use a critical lens in developing and implementing teaching and learning strategies, activities and resources.

Key features of the series will include:

  • Creating a Balanced and Integrated Overarching Framework for Teaching Language Arts
  • Organizing for Learning and Instruction – Making the Most of Your Instructional Minutes
  • Exploring Disciplinary and multimodal Literacy
  • Use of Technology to support Literacy and Digital Citizenship
  • Using Mentor Texts for “Thinking Like a Reader/Writer”
  • Processes for building a “Thinking Classroom” to develop Student Competencies
  • Establishing a Culture of Readers and Writers
  • Exploring Cross-Curricular Connections and Transfer Learning
  • Teaching Critical Literacy/Critical Thinking to Become Competent Readers and Writers
  • Planning for Diversity and Differentiation
  • Assessing, Evaluating and Communicating Student Growth
