This two-day workshop will explore the following areas of cortical visual impairment (CVI):

  • Overview of CVI. Up-to-date new research and insights into CVI, it’s development and progression.
  • Methods for assessment of functional vision of individuals with CVI.
  • The importance of early intervention and common diagnostic issues.
  • Exploring the CVI Range.
  • The greater impact of CVI in phase 111- The continued importance of services.
  • Best approaches to assessment and intervention. This allows for precise supports based on the status of the CVI characteristics.
  • How to integrate the CVI interventions and supports across routines of the day? Incorporating CVI goals and interventions into the IEP.
  • Strategies on building learning and language skills and communication.
  • Exploring communication access by examining augmentative and alternative communication access, evaluating recent scientific and technical advances in the areas of AAC and discussing the challenges to access AAC technologies for a range of communication activities.
  • Explore case studies to help identify activities specifically used to assist children with CVI communicate. The SLPs role in CVI. How it impacts our AAC learners and equipment and materials used.
  • Present case studies exploring how to assist children with CVI with mobility and orientation. Useful for OT and PT sessions as well as daily living.
  • Information on methods to facilitate literacy for individuals with CVI. Consider the impact of the CVI characteristics on learning as well as literacy suggestions.
  • How to enhance teaching and learning for students with CVI
