Tim Coates taught for 12 years, receiving an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Province of Alberta in 1993. Tim joined Alberta Education in 1994. He served as the Examination Manager of the Social Studies 33 and 30 Diploma Examination, and later as Director of the Diploma Examination Program. During his time at Alberta Education Tim also worked in the Curriculum Branch of Alberta helping develop the senior high school social studies program. In his last two years with the ministry he was the coordinator of the Classroom Assessment Capacity Project. Tim teaches a classroom assessment course at the University of Alberta.
Tim’s expertise is in all matters regarding the relationship among assessment, programs of studies, and instruction. His special interest is working with teachers and school authorities on how to enhance the quality of classroom assessment and ensure the most appropriate means to report assessment results to multiple assessment audiences.
