Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction
Innovators don’t invent without a deep understanding of how the world works. With this foundation, they apply conceptual understanding to solve new problems. This workshop provides tools for how to help students uncover conceptual relationships and transfer them to new situations.

Day One:

  • Investigate the role of conceptual understanding in retrieval of information, depth of understanding and transfer of learning
  • Understand that transfer is both a means and an end
  • Examine the importance of quality thinking and metacognition in transfer of learning

Day Two:

  • Recognize and use the key building blocks of authentic assessments
  • Harness the power of formtative assessments in the learning journey
  • Design lessons that build learning transfer

Learning Outcomes:

  • Select and apply strategies for introducing conceptual learning to students
  • Discuss lesson frameworks to help students uncover conceptual relationships
  • Compare methods for assessing conceptual understanding
  • Plan specific ways to differentiate in a concept-based classroom
