Have you ever thought about how spelling can be studied in a way to improve reading comprehension? Traditional spelling programs tend to focus on the letter-sound relationship of phonics, whereas Structured Word Inquiry (SWI) aligns the study of morphology (how words are constructed), etymology (word origins and relatives) and phonology (letter-sound relationships) to build strategic readers who can use the spelling of a word as a clue to determine its meaning.

In this interactive webinar session, you will learn about the foundational knowledge necessary to build your understanding of how to use Structured Word Inquiry (SWI) from linguist Gina Cooke, who has collaborated with SWI educators and researchers such as Peter Bowers. Bowers describes SWI as “using the principles of scientific inquiry as the basis of word-level literacy instruction”. For this two-hour webinar,  Gina covers the foundational principles of Structured Word Inquiry, the Four Questions, the Word Sum, and the Matrix. This session includes PDF handouts and a short film resource to be shared after the webinar.
