This introductory session will support K-2 teachers in adopting a workshop approach to their writing instruction, using the Units of Study in Opinion, Information and Narrative Writing by Lucy Calkins and colleagues.

In this hands-on interactive session, you will have the opportunity to learn about:

  • the structure of a writing workshop
  • materials and routines for launching a workshop with young writers
  • efficient ways to plan and deliver minilessons
  • conferring and small group work to differentiate for student needs
  • the role of literature in helping children craft powerful writing
  • shared writing, interactive writing and storytelling as supports for independent writing
  • assessment in a writing workshop and the developmental pathways of young writers
  • how the resources are organized and tips for using them effectively
