Ciara Smith, B. Ed, M. Ed, is an ESL Consultant with Elk Island Catholic Schools. She has worked as a classroom teacher, an ELL Instructional Coach, and ESL Consultant in her eleven years as an educator. During this time, Ciara has taught at both the middle school and high school levels. As a lifelong learner, Ciara has pursued a number of educational opportunities to further her understanding of how to better support English language learners in the classroom including, her M. Ed in the area of Educational Leadership with a focus on English Language Learners, SIOP Level I certification, SIOP Level II certification, SIOP Train the Trainer certification, TEFL certification, and TEYL certification.

7-9, 10-12‘Good teaching’ strategies are often effective in helping our ELLs progress but what can we do to make sure we are targeting instruction to meet their unique needs?
This interactive session, will draw upon Sheltered Instruction principles (e.g., SIOP®), as well as the ERLC’s ELL planning model, which was developed with second language acquisition in mind.
You will have time to explore foundational components to supporting ELLs in mainstream classes and come away with a rich set of tools, resources, and learning activities that you can use to target ELL instruction in a manageable way while still enabling you to teach outcomes to the whole class.
