Ciara Smith, B. Ed, M. Ed, is an ESL Consultant with Elk Island Catholic Schools. She has worked as a classroom teacher, an ELL Instructional Coach, and ESL Consultant in her eleven years as an educator. During this time, Ciara has taught at both the middle school and high school levels. As a lifelong learner, Ciara has pursued a number of educational opportunities to further her understanding of how to better support English language learners in the classroom including, her M. Ed in the area of Educational Leadership with a focus on English Language Learners, SIOP Level I certification, SIOP Level II certification, SIOP Train the Trainer certification, TEFL certification, and TEYL certification.

AllThe Alberta K-12 Proficiency Benchmarks are a useful tool that teachers can use to assess students’ English language proficiency. Understanding the Benchmarks will not only help teachers plan effectively for the English Language Learners (ELL) in their class but also provide teachers with essential knowledge on how students acquire a second language.
In the morning of this interactive session, you will explore the Benchmarks in depth and discuss strategies for efficiently and effectively Benchmarking ELLs.
In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to explore a plethora of resources to help support ELLs as well as begin to develop a plan for integrating the strategies discussed into your current practice.
