“Young children learn the most important things, not by being told, but by constructing knowledge for themselves in interaction with the physical world and with other children - and the way they do this is by playing.” (Jones & Reynolds, 1992).

This session will offer an introduction to Emergent Curriculum which is at the heart of many early learning programs. Together we will:

  • identify what Emergent Curriculum is and what it is not
  • highlight what Emergent Curriculum looks like in daily practice
  • discuss what it means to be responsive and intentional
  • understand the Cycle of Planning
  • determine how we honour curriculum and program objectives within an emergent curriculum
  • recognize how the classroom environment and pedagogical documentation support an emergent curriculum

During the day, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your students and plan for possible provocations to extend their play, ideas, and understandings.

We will reference Play, Participation and Possibilities: An Early Learning and Child Care Curriculum Framework for Alberta and The Alberta Kindergarten Program Statement throughout our session.
