Self-selected reading is important for all students, including students with significant cognitive disabilities. Without the opportunity to learn that reading is an interesting and enjoyable activity that they can do successfully and independently, skills-based instruction is seldom generalized. Finding a just-right book that matches student’s interests and reading level, is appealing and age respectful for students with significant disabilities can be a huge challenge.

During this workshop, you will explore:

  • Selecting ‘just right’ books
  • Teacher read-alouds
  • Mini-lessons
  • Making books and reading more accessible
  • Teacher conferencing with students
  • Teacher- and student-created books

You will also be introduced to Tar Heel Reader, taught how to use it to read and write books, and provided with time to create books for individual students.

Target Audience

Teachers, Instructional/Learning Coaches, Teacher Assistants, Inclusive Learning Teachers, Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists
