Kate Cooper has been a member of Dr. Alex Lawson's team of mathematics educators and researchers at Lakehead University since 2013. Kate currently teaches some of the math curriculum and instruction courses within the Bachelor of Education program at Lakehead University's Orillia campus. She has also been involved in the development and delivery of an online Primary/Junior Math Additional Qualification course for in-service teachers. Kate has worked closely with Dr. Lawson on a number of projects, from conducting research in primary mathematics classrooms to delivering professional development sessions for educators across Ontario. She has also created and organized various materials to support Dr. Lawson's written publications or conference presentations. Kate's main research interests within the area of mathematics instruction include early algebra instruction, the development of primary students' multiplicative reasoning, and instructional practices that promote effective mathematical discourse.

AllChildren arrive in Grade 1 with a range of abilities — from those just learning to count to those who can add, subtract, multiply, and divide with small numbers. How do teachers support all of these children to learn with understanding, enthusiasm, and proficiency? In this highly interactive course, we focus on recognizing and assessing children’s initial thinking so that we can help them to develop more efficient addition and subtraction strategies.
Highlights of Course:
- Analyze student videos to learn to recognize and assess the many strategies children use for basic calculations
- Develop a continuum of strategies from early counting (e.g., counting three times) through increasingly efficient strategies to knowing the ‘facts’
- Analyze student work and thinking on the continuum
- Practise mini-lessons, create word problems, and play games that foster children’s growth and learning
- Align early learning math strategies to AB math curriculum
