K-3When we set out to design an impactful literacy program, there are many competing priorities:
- outcomes in the programs of study
- analysis of diagnostic assessments
- our knowledge of the needs and interests of our students
- our ongoing assessment/reporting practices
- new priorities and documents coming from Alberta Education that are relevant to our current context but are also integral to new curriculums being developed
- school and/or district literacy initiatives
- research from literacy experts in the field and guiding principles from influential authors and resources such as Fountas & Pinnell, Words Their Way and Lucy Calkins
- honouring Inclusive Education including First Nations, Métis and Inuit, and English Language Learners
- and the expectation that we provide flexible, responsive instruction
How can we weave it all together in a manageable way to the maximum benefit of our students?
You will be given time to do a deep dive into guiding documents including Literacy Progressions and Competencies from Alberta Education as well as the latest research, our favourite literacy resources and the ERLC Comprehensive Literacy series. You are invited to bring along any additional 'guiding' documents from your own context (e.g. Scope and Sequences) to discuss with groups and integrate into your work throughout the day.
Through a blend of learning activities, guided inquiry, group discussions, sharing and collaborative planning time, you will leave armed with practical ideas for your classroom, renewed confidence, and a concrete action plan. Not only will you be familiar with the strengths of your current programming and areas for growth, but you will have a head start as we gear up for new curriculum.
