Sherri Johnston has been a teacher for over 20 years. She has her M.Ed. in Elementary Literacy and is passionate about reading. She served as a district literacy consultant in Elk Island Public Schools for ten years where she supported both English and French Language Arts teachers. Sherri has taught all subjects, Grades 4 – 9, including three years as a teacher-librarian. She is currently on secondment with the Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium and is pleased to support K-12 Literacy.

K-3This collaborative session is designed to support coaches and literacy leads at the school and district level. Come learn more about what your colleagues are doing to support literacy in their schools, enhance your personal skills as a literacy coach, and leave with new ideas to implement in your context.
Key topics for the day include:
- Art of guiding teachers to use best practices - identifying areas of focus/need
- Building trusting relationships with colleagues
- Tips for coaching and modeling in classrooms - how to get the most learning from the experience (planning, co-teaching, problem solving, time for reflection, giving feedback)
- Understanding change process and honouring where teachers are at
- Organizing your schedule, allowing time for planning, reporting and tracking
- Communicating with administrators
- Spreading the message across the staff, how to move beyond working with the willing
- Sharing resources with your school(s)
- Enhancing your own literacy expertise: foundational literacy practices, recommended resources, upcoming sessions
- Discuss teacher/student "case studies" - generate possible solutions and share expertise
