Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium (ERLC) will once again facilitate a Community of Practice with a focus on inquiry/project based learning (PBL) during the 2017/18 school year.  We have an amazing group of schools lined up!!  Participants will meet five times throughout the year to engage in professional learning that includes: visits to 3 amazing schools/classrooms to view inquiry/PBL in action, facilitated opportunities for professional dialogue, opportunities to build relationships and new networks, and processes for reflection.

Details

  • The series will begin with a full-day orientation session.  This session will review the essential elements of inquiry; the connections between inquiry, project based learning, CTF, problem based learning and design thinking. We will also review the structure and format for this community of practice and the school visits.  You will have the opportunity to connect with/begin to build a sense of community with your colleagues.
  • This session will include three half-day visits to Edmonton area schools.  At each school, classroom visits will focus on targeted elements of inquiry (eg.  driving question, resources, research practices, managing projects, authentic audience, incorporation of competencies).  The host teachers will pre-identify elements of learning related to inquiry/PBL and reflective questions to guide the classroom visits.  Post classroom conversations with the host teachers, will center on the pre-identified elements - teachers openly talking to teachers about instruction related to inquiry and student learning!!
  • As part of this series, you will be encouraged to implement at least one idea/strategy in your school between visits, and share your experience in that implementation at the next school visit.
  • On December 8, you will have the opportunity to attend a half day session with assessment expert, Sandra Herbst, who will share effective assessment practices related to inquiry.
  • The last school visit will extend into a luncheon, when you will have the opportunity to consolidate your learning with your colleagues.

Join us for this authentic, practical and informative series!
