Douglas Fisher, Ph.D., is Professor of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University and a teacher leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College. Doug is a researcher who is interested in school improvement, especially in the area of quality instruction. He is the recipient of the 2016 ILA Adolescent Literacy Thought Leader Award, an IRA Celebrate Literacy Award, NCTE’s Farmer Award for Excellence in Writing, a member of the California Reading Hall of Fame as well as a Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in Teacher Education. He is a teacher leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College in San Diego and has served as a teacher, language development specialist, and administrator in public schools and non-profit organizations. Doug has co-authored over 40+ books with his colleague Nancy Frey and other esteemed authors such as John Hattie, Diane Lapp (professor of education at SDSU focused on struggling readers and writers) and Jana Echavarria (professor at California State University focused on English Learners and founder of the SIOP model). AllThis two-day Secondary Literacy Symposium will feature a powerful day with Douglas Fisher followed by a day of breakout sessions to dig deeper. The sessions are designed to educate and arm teachers with practical strategies specific to secondary readers and writers so they launch into a new school year excited to make a greater impact and deepen the learning in whatever subject they teach.

Educators have been in search of “what works” for decades. The truth is, nearly all things teachers do work when we ask what improves student achievement, but only a few things work at ensuring that students gain a full year’s worth of growth for a year of enrollment in school, and we think it’s time we focused on what works, what doesn’t work, and what can’t hurt. Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey applied John Hattie’s revolutionary research of Visible Learning to their literacy classrooms. Douglas will highlight the results of their work, review the phases of learning and explore how students must develop surface-level knowledge if they are ever going to go deep and be able to transfer and apply their knowledge in new ways. After years of research in the field and practical application of literacy strategies in classrooms, he will share wisdom about reaching the 'hard to teach', strategies for helping students handle more complex texts and guiding principles for intentional teaching.

Dr. Leyton Schnellert is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan Campus. Leyton has been a secondary classroom teacher and a learning resource teacher for K–12. He has 20 years of experience as a school and district-based resource teacher and professional development facilitator across British Columbia, the Yukon and Northwest Territories. He is the co-author of a series of resources entitled It's All About Thinking:
