AllThis two-day Secondary Literacy Symposium will feature a powerful day with Douglas Fisher followed by a day of breakout sessions to dig deeper. The sessions are designed to educate and arm teachers with practical strategies specific to secondary readers and writers so they launch into a new school year excited to make a greater impact and deepen the learning in whatever subject they teach.
Keynote: Douglas Fisher - Tuesday, August 15
Educators have been in search of “what works” for decades. The truth is, nearly all things teachers do work when we ask what improves student achievement, but only a few things work at ensuring that students gain a full year’s worth of growth for a year of enrollment in school, and we think it’s time we focused on what works, what doesn’t work, and what can’t hurt. Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey applied John Hattie’s revolutionary research of Visible Learning to their literacy classrooms. Douglas will highlight the results of their work, review the phases of learning and explore how students must develop surface-level knowledge if they are ever going to go deep and be able to transfer and apply their knowledge in new ways. After years of research in the field and practical application of literacy strategies in classrooms, he will share wisdom about reaching the 'hard to teach', strategies for helping students handle more complex texts and guiding principles for intentional teaching.
