Sandy Kenrick is a mother of two boys. Her oldest, age 6, is Deaf-Blind. His first language is American Sign Language. Her youngest, age 3, has typical vision and hearing. His first language is English. They are a "bilingual household' (both ASL and English are used). Sandy has taught at the elementary level and high school in general education classrooms. She is also a regular 'blogger' for Paths to Literacy Website; a website that helps support a love for literacy for children who are blind or visually impaired (http://www.pathstoliteracy.org/users/liamsmom). Sandy has also been a part of creating a module for Open Hands, Open Access: Deaf-Blind Intervener Learning Modules through the National Center for Deafblindness. In addition, she has taught a webinar for Perkins School for the Blind titled, " Accessible Books and Literacy: Supporting and Encouraging a Love for Literacy". She presented a session titled: Making Literacy Accessible to Young Children at the "Getting in Touch With Literacy Conference" that took place in Albuquerque, NM. More recently, she has created and instructed an online course through Perkins school for the Blind titled: Accessible Literacy for Early Readers: Students Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Deafblind. Sandy loves learning everything she can about all things 'Deaf-Blind', 'Blind' and 'Deaf' to help support and advocate for her son.

AllSandy Kenrick will share her journey of making literacy accessible for her son. She will share practical tips and strategies so that viewers can create their own accessible materials for the children with vision impairments in their life. The following areas will be discussed and examples given: story boxes, experience stories, conversation boxes, tactile graphics, concept books and an accessible braille-rich environment. This is a webinar designed for educators and families alike on how to help support a love for literacy for our children with vision impairments.
