Engaging students in competency-focused instruction and assessment that supports their learning is now more important than ever! And yet, both teachers and leaders raise questions that require thoughtful responses.

Please join us for a three-part series where we will explore both the opportunities and challenges of effective competency-based design. During the two full-day sessions and one webinar, you will learn more about:

Preparing for competency-based learning, teaching, and assessment, by:

  • Determining the learning destination
  • Researching expected levels of quality
  • Planning to collect reliable and valid evidence of learning
  • Collecting baseline evidence of learning

Engaging students in competency-based assessment in support of their learning, by:

  • Describing the learning destination and expected quality
  • Involving students and providing time and support for them to learn
  • Teaching to student need based on assessment evidence
  • Collecting reliable and valid evidence of learning

Reporting students’ learning to others, by:

  • Finalizing the collection of evidence of learning
  • Making informed professional judgments
  • Reporting learning and achievement using the required format
  • Involving students in the reporting process

Through the use of video clips and accounts from elementary schools, we will uncover assessment strategies that work with younger learners, yet support competency-based instruction. In particular, we will examine the power and promise of gradual release of responsibility to build both competence and confidence in Kindergarten through Grade 8 classrooms.

This series provides us all the chance to go deeper into our own learning; in-between sessions, you will be able to not only think about, but also use and refine strategies. Bring back your questions and adaptations. Come prepared to learn from our facilitators, Sandra Herbst and Brenda August and, more importantly, one another.
