This webinar will consider the vision of the Albertan global citizen marketed by the Alberta government through an exploration of the Inspired Education Curriculum being put in place by Alberta Education. You will examine the concept of global citizenship through an exploration of the precarious futures/lives Canadian youth encounter. The skills outlined in the Alberta Inspired Education Curriculum call for a new vision of education, focused on creating

  1. engaged thinkers,
  2. ethical citizens, and
  3. entrepreneurial spirit

In effect, youth will succeed by “creating their own opportunities and achiev[ing] goals though hard work, perseverance and discipline” (Alberta Education, 2010, p. 5).

This webinar will consider how global citizenship is conceptualized and mandated through Alberta Education in order to teach the skills needed for “success” in contemporary times. This session also asks what definition(s) of good global citizenship is used in such models through exploring what inspiration really means and who is considered inspiring.

This opportunity is presented in partnership with the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation (ACGC) www.acgc.ca and the Center for Global Citizenship Education and Research (CGCER) http://www.cgcer.ualberta.ca/.
