The Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium (ERLC) is hosting a Community of Practice for beginning or veteran teachers who are interested in deepening their understanding of foundational literacy practices. We will meet a total of five times (face-to-face and online) throughout the school year to engage in professional learning.

The face-to face meetings will take place in October, November and March and webinars are scheduled for January and May. One or two classroom visits to see literacy learning in action will be integrated in the face-to-face sessions.

 Key topics of learning include:

  • What does 100 minutes of daily literacy programming look like?
  • How to integrate all components of a comprehensive literacy program in your daily/weekly plans including reading, writing, phonemic awareness, word work and oral language
  • Classroom design - making the most of your space
  • Tips for classroom management, supporting diverse learners and communicating with parents
  • Guiding principles for whole group, small group and one-on-one instruction
  • Diagnostic Literacy Assessments
  • Digital literacy, visual and cross-curricular literacy
