This two-day series will provide both the background knowledge and the opportunity to develop a series of inquiry based lessons which incorporate rich formative feedback.

November 8, 2016

Day One: In this session you will:

  • Critically explore the current research from the leaders in the field of early childhood development. Learn what experiences either positively or negatively impact children’s over healthy development for the early years and beyond.
  • Reflecting upon the research and consider what impact this information has on how we need to teach children in the early years (Ages 0-10)? What do we know about how young children learn and develop?  What is play and how does play contribute to overall learning and cognitive development?
  • Consider what executive functioning skills are and why they are important to be successful in life?  How can we foster the development of these skills?
  • Begin to use a template that is used to design & plan for problem-rich, motivating learning experiences for all children. You will learn how both the teacher and the learning environment is essential for scaffolding and supporting students’ as their learning progresses and how to begin to consider the use of ongoing assessment to guide the learning.
  • Finally, leave the session with an initial idea/plan of how you will implement some of this work on your own over the next few weeks in your classroom and decide how to capture evidence of your learning to be shared and celebrated on day two.

Day Two: In this session you will:

  • Each share your stories and evidence of how you have moved your learning forward thru the implementation of the plan and designing learning opportunities that reflect on the information shared on day one.
  • Further explore where and how to do continue to support ongoing learning and professional growth in designing effective early learning environments and assessment. Considering the following questions:
    • What are some teaching approaches that promote learning for young children?
    • How do we create physical spaces that invite children to want to inquire, explore, and solve problems while they are learning?
    • What materials and resources are important for teaching in the early grades?
    • How to effectively assess and document the learning in an active inquiry based learning environment?

This presentation is based on the research and materials from the Galileo Educational Network.
