English language learners face the dual challenge of developing both English skills and literacy skills. Teachers can provide the guidance and practice needed for ELLs to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening abilities in English. We will address the question, “What do educators need to know and be able to do to teach literacy for ELLs?

In this interactive session, you will:

  • explore ways to help ELLs comprehend what they read, including challenging instructional material;
  • examine writing samples and collaboratively plan instruction based on student strengths and needs;
  • discover how to create an effective vocabulary program to build academic language proficiency;
  • and learn about effective strategies for the development of speaking and listening skills.
