Sherri Johnston has been a teacher for over 20 years. She has her M.Ed. in Elementary Literacy and is passionate about reading. She served as a district literacy consultant in Elk Island Public Schools for ten years where she supported both English and French Language Arts teachers. Sherri has taught all subjects, Grades 4 – 9, including three years as a teacher-librarian. She is currently on secondment with the Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium and is pleased to support K-12 Literacy.

7-9Come join a collaborative community of teachers as we delve into ways to best support adolescent readers. We will start with a review of foundational literacy principles and then explore methods that help teenage readers engage with diverse texts, become more self-aware of how they approach reading and expand their toolbox of reading strategies.
We will discuss diagnostic reading assessments, grammar, vocabulary development, book clubs and wisdom from adolescent literacy experts such as Kylene Beers, Robert Probst, Penny Kittle, Kelly Gallagher, Douglas Fisher and Harvey Daniels. We will also examine how to apply the new Alberta Education streamlined competencies in the English Language Arts classroom.
This three day session will feature an engaging mix of learning, professional articles, discussion and sharing. You will leave with an enriched understanding of adolescent literacy and practical tools to support diverse readers in your classroom.
