AllThe Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium (ERLC) is hosting a Community of Practice for educators who have utilized an inquiry or project based learning approach and wish to continue to enhance and refine their practice. This series will run from October 2016 to March 2017. Participants will meet four times to engage in personal professional learning that includes school visits to view exemplary teachers in action, professional dialogue, networking and reflection.
The goals of this project are to:
- Deepen understanding of/observe how inquiry is “lived” in today’s schools;
- Examine research related to inquiry; connect research to your own practice; and reflect on implications for enhancing and refining inquiry/PBL approach in your classroom.
Details
- The series will begin with a full-day orientation session. This session will review the essential elements of inquiry; the connections between inquiry, project based learning, CTF, problem based learning and design thinking – how are they the same and how are they different. We will also review the structure and format for this community of practice and provide you with the opportunity to connect and begin to build a sense of community with your colleagues.
- This session will be followed up with three half-day visits to Edmonton area schools.
- At each school, 1 – 3 teachers and/or leaders will share their experiences in relation to inquiry/PBL, you will engage in professional dialogue and Q&A with teachers and/or leaders from the school; tour 2 -3 classrooms to view inquiry/PBL in action and learn from the your colleague's wisdom and experiences with inquiry/PBL.
- Each school will focus on one or more of the following areas within the inquiry process: how to create questions that drive inquiry/projects; fine tuning assessment practices; how to engage students in meaningful research; effectively managing projects; finding appropriate resources, experts and an authentic audience; how to use an inquiry/PBL approach to support for the development of Alberta’s competencies; how much voice and choice is enough/too much and more!
You will have the opportunity to share your own experiences and strategies related to inquiry/PBL.
