Learning Opportunities

The key for better student learning starts with the classroom environment. We will address some particular issues to consider in Division I and Division 2 math classrooms.

As well, we will explore how K – 6 teachers need to go beyond the limited details of curriculum outcomes to reveal the big ideas in mathematics. This is particularly important as we look at cross-curricular competencies like thinking critically and managing information.

It is by focusing on the bigger picture that teachers will help their students make critical connections.

You will meet a set of big ideas in number, shape and space and patterns and relations that underlie curriculum outcomes in K-6. You will see how these big ideas make it possible to better consolidate learning since students meet these ideas over and over again. You will experience how attention to those ideas in developing learning goals changes the feel of math instruction and math assessment.
