Helping teachers see mathematics through the eyes of a learner…

Are you looking for a practical framework with which to diagnose, teach, and monitor students' progress in mathematics development?  Do you want a way to report this information to school systems, parents, and the wider community?

First Steps in Mathematics is a professional development resource that can fulfill these needs by enabling you to successfully link learning, instruction and assessment. In addition, it gives your schools a common language with which to describe student progress and a new precision professional dialogue around analyzing and addressing student needs. This professional learning resource is the product of an extensive review of all available international research and thousands of student work samples. First Steps in Mathematics enables teachers to assess and monitor their students' mathematics progress and provides links to developmentally appropriate teaching strategies and learning activities.

During this interactive 3-day workshop, you will learn how to analyze student work and diagnose what each student understands, using the appropriate Diagnostic Tasks presented in the Number Course Book. Instructions for the administration of each task will be provided.

The tasks enable teachers from Kindergarten to Grade 9 to gather information about a class or about a student. Tasks include:

  • whole-class activity student worksheets,
  • small-group interviews,
  • individual interviews.

The first two days will be offered before school starts and the third day will be offered at the end of September. This will give you a chance to complete some diagnostics and come back to assess the information you have and make a plan on how to move your students forward.
