What are some practical and effective ways to invite critical thinking when we have so much curriculum content to cover? How can I expect students to think when they are still learning the basics? What does critical thinking look like in different subject areas and grades? How might I design learning to intellectually engage students?

These important questions reflect many of the challenging contexts that Alberta teachers grapple with. To address such questions, this session will examine practical and powerful practices that invite critical thinking across the curriculum. You will also investigate the intellectual tools required for competencies related to critical, creative and collaborative thinking. We will explore how to 'tweak' common instructional strategies—including brainstorming, compare and contrast, think-pair-share, find the definition and group sharing—to become engaging, powerful critical thinking tasks that develop student abilities to think, communicate and act.
