This interactive session will feature hands-on tasks, strategies, collaborative conversations and online resources that can support Junior High students with increasing literacy demands.

We will discuss how to help students make sense of what they read, enhance student vocabulary, discuss graphic organizers and assistive technology tools, and look at ways to facilitate critical thinking and meaningful social interaction. When we, as teachers, make a few purposeful instructional shifts and are cognizant of the literacy demands we are asking of students (whether it is reading a short story, writing an essay analyzing the actions of Louis Riel, or reflecting on the rise of humanism during the Renaissance), student literacy skills can blossom. Imagine Language Arts and Social Studies classrooms where students are actively thinking, highly engaged, enjoy coming to class, feel supported and approach tasks more confidently!
