Connie Zimmer is a passionate educator who currently works for Park West School Division as a curriculum consultant supporting teachers in Kindergarten to Grade 8. She has over 20 years of experience as a classroom teacher. She truly enjoys supporting teachers and believes that embracing a growth mindset is essential to becoming a life-long learner. She believes that all students can reach their potential when teachers ensure that instruction is differentiated and when they provide instruction that has been proven through research to have a positive impact on student achievement.

K-3, 4-6This workshop provides participants with an overview of the Words Their Way: Word Study in Action resource including components and strategies to ensure a successful implementation.
Highlights of this professional learning include:
- Review the research findings
- Understand the stages of development and instructional levels critical to learning to read
- Unpack the five stages of spelling development: Emergent Early, Letter Name, Word Patterns, Syllables and Affixes, Derivational Relations
- Examine key factors involving word study and recognize and demonstrate word sorting as an instructional strategy
- Connect students’ reading needs with word study activities
- Practice word sort activities to promote phonics, spelling, and vocabulary acquisition
- General overview of this developmental approach to spelling, phonics, and vocabulary instruction
You will become aware of the benefits of implementing this program in comparison to a traditional spelling program. You will come to understand how Words Their Way is one component of a balanced literacy program. Recognize the importance of linking the spelling inventory results to writing and benchmark reading assessment.
