If you haven’t been to a Box Cars Workshop in the past 2 years, then it’s time for an update. Author Jane and John Felling has worked extensively over the past 4 years developing new games, journal writing and extensions, and ideas to differentiate activities to provide enrichment, as well as support for ESL and special education. The past two years have seen the publication of 4 new resources packed full of journal writing, student samples, math talk extensions and large format gameboards.

WORKSHOP DETAILS:

Are you looking for engaging and effective ways to help your primary students gain confidence and competence with key math concepts? Come prepared to play math games that incorporate the use of cards, dice, multi-sided dice, number lines, fraction manipulatives, dominoes and other easily found math manipulatives. Concepts covered include:

  • Understanding Place Value System including Whole Numbers and Decimals Fractions, Decimals and Percent including Operations with Fractions Numbers and Operations in Base Ten, Multi-Digit  Operations
  • Fact Fluency Intervention - Basic Facts
  • Statistics, Data Management and Organization of Data

Throughout the workshop, you will have opportunity to play each game, learn how to differentiate the activities, how to develop math journal extensions, maximize math talk, and how to use the game activities for assessment purposes. Student samples, gameboards, ideas for whole/small group instruction will be provided. Interspersed will be practical ideas for classroom organization and management to ensure effective implementation of games as a teaching strategy. Ideas for developing weekly lessons plans, and samples will be shared. You will be able to implement what you learn the next day in your classrooms and schools. An extensive handout will be provided.
