What are competencies? Why focus on competencies? What is the Ministerial Order on Student Learning? Is there an expectation from Alberta Education that I teach/support the development of competencies presented in the Ministerial Order on Student Learning? Yes!!!

This learning opportunity is your opportunity to engage in professional learning that is designed specifically with middle and secondary educators in mind. When you attend this one-day session, you will discover powerful, practical, and informed strategies that can help you uncover more connections between competency-based education and assessment and evaluation, as well as ways to drive student achievement.

Session highlights include:

  • A day of professional learning for middle and secondary school teachers, leaders, and professional support staff.
  • Information about the essential components of assessment and evaluation in a competency-based environment – preparing for learning, teaching, and assessment; engaging students in assessment in support of their learning; and reporting the learning to others.
  • Strategies to get to a final percentage, mark, or score that includes evidence from multiple sources - product, observation, and conversation.
  • Examples, video clips, and accounts from middle and secondary teachers across a wide variety of discipline areas and programs.
  • Opportunities to talk about challenges in assessment and evaluation at the middle and secondary levels (e.g. preparing students for university entrance, dealing with late assignments, large number of students per term or semester).
  • Time to network, reflect, and share with other middle and secondary educators during the session and over lunch.
