What are the “basics” of Div. I math?

Additive thinking is a key step towards being a numerate citizen. However, addition and subtraction strategies rely on teachers first building a deep understanding of place value with students. Otherwise, students are asked to rely on memorizing teacher - led "skills".

As teachers, we must have enough confidence in our personal number sense so that we can convey a positive mindset about mathematics.

We will explore:

  • How it feels to think like a student who is just developing place value understanding.
  • Use of open number lines to build number sense
  • Deep place value understanding as a key to developing basic facts
  • Improving mental math skills by building intuitive skills and number relations
  • How to encourage  our kids to act like mathematicians
