Too often, in the midst of busy planning days, we resort to downloading an easy-to-find “answer these questions after each chapter” novel study booklet. But are we really teaching and assessing comprehension? Do these ten questions empower our developing and fluent readers to become deep thinkers who understand the techniques of authors? Are we creating kids who love to read and talk about what they read?

If you have ever experienced dissatisfaction with a novel study you are using and if you’ve ever wondered how you might bring more authentic thinking and responding to your reading classroom, join us for this interactive workshop featuring lifelong reading strategies and thinking skills.

We’ll model the thinking processes at work by each and every reader aged 2 – 102. Then we’ll connect thinking to the most effective reading strategies for a variety of fictional texts.

Bring that novel study you’re using this year. Let’s ramp it up by omitting some of those low level questions and replace them with one or two high level questions and a comprehension strategy that your students can own and use this year and next, in a variety of subject areas.

Guided by the work of Zimmerman & Hutchins, Harvey & Goudvis,  Oczkus, Schwartz & Bone, Trehearne, and Fountas & Pinnell, we’ll show you how to bring life back into the reading classroom with choice, high level thinking, and the language of thinking that empowers our students for life.
