Dr. Joyce Purdy has been an educator for over 20 years. She completed her PhD in 2008 in the area of Literacy and English Language Learners. Joyce has taught at the elementary level as well as pre-service teachers at the University of Alberta. After her graduate work, Joyce was both an ESL consultant and a Literacy Consultant with Edmonton Public Schools. As a consultant, Joyce provided professional learning, coaching and support at all division levels for teachers of English language learners.

AllThe “Alberta K-12 Proficiency Benchmarks” were designed to assess the language proficiency of English Language Learners in the classroom context. This information helps teachers to program effectively and to report progress to students and parents.
In this interactive session, you will learn how to use the benchmarks to monitor the language acquisition of English Language Learners, and to plan for instruction based on proficiency levels. Strategies for each level of proficiency will be presented.
This session is being offered on a cost recovery basis.
