Rachel E. Williams, M.Ed, Special Education (Autism – Children), has held the position of Education Specialist and Training Coordinator at the Centre for Autism Services Alberta for the past 6 years. She remains first and foremost a teacher with ten years’ experience as a classroom teacher in both inclusive and specialized settings for children in grades 1-12 both in Canada and England. She worked for five years as an advisory teacher for children with ASD attending mainstream schools in the UK.

AllIn this learning opportunity, you will review the diagnostic criteria and associated features of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Interactive opportunities designed to enhance understanding of some of the experiences of those on the spectrum are provided. Basic suggestions for more effective interactions will be presented. A brief review of the research on a variety of treatment options and best practices for working with those with a diagnosis of autism is included. Behaviours are discussed in the context of opportunities for learning and skill building. You will be offered a range of simple strategies designed to assist in the management of behaviour with particular emphasis on prevention.
You will also be given practical ideas and strategies to help children with ASD, transition to school, moving from one grade to another or to a new school. These are challenging times which often impacts the entire family. These strategies make these times of change more successful and prepare children to manage change positively.
