Dr. Kathryn Smith is an instructor in the Departments of Elementary Education and Music at the University of Alberta. She has taught in rural, urban, and international schools and served for many years as a music consultant for Edmonton Public Schools. She received the 2008 Phi Delta Kappa Doctoral Dissertation Award for her work in early childhood music education. She is currently involved in research related to the many ways that music can promote and enhance the development of literacy. Dr. Smith is an active conference presenter in the areas of musical play in early childhood, song-based picture books in developing early literacy, children’s literature and music education, choral music in elementary schools, and a wide range of topics related to teaching excellence in elementary school music environments.

Planning Your Year in Music
This session will introduce a variety of ideas that will support you as you plan your year. It will include suggestions for curricular planning, planning with the Programs of Study in mind, ideas for managing and organizing the music classroom and a variety of musical activities. Materials and ideas for winter concerts will also be included.
Instrumental Experiences for Primary Grades
Children love to use instruments and this session will introduce a variety of ways that instruments can be included in primary classrooms.
Afternoon Session
Children’s Literature as Inspiration for Children’s Musical Experiences
Many musical experiences can be inspired by children’s literature. This session will give a variety of practical examples of the ways in which children’s literature can enhance the music curriculum.
