K-3“Research has documented that early preparation in mathematics is the biggest predictor in later school achievement.” Duncan – 2007
Number sense focuses on numbers and their operations - what they mean, how we represent them, and how and why we use them in our everyday lives. Students require a sound grasp of the meanings of numbers. They also need to develop an understanding of the meaning and use of basic operations, a working and flexible repertoire of computational skills, and the capacity to identify and work with number patterns and relationships. As a result of strong number sense students will develop confidence in their ability to deal with numerical situations with flexibility, ease and efficiency.
To achieve this, we will explore a wide range of learning experiences that will focus on subitizing, place value not face value, addition and subtraction. This in turn will help you enable students to understand numbers, understand operations, and to calculate and reason with confidence.
The session will incorporate work done by James Burnett and Brian Tickle from ORIGO math, and it aligns with the current Math curriculum.
