More English Language Learners (ELLs) are enrolling in our Alberta schools than ever before. Is your school district/school prepared to welcome and meet the complex needs of these students and their families?

During the morning, you will hear about a variety of successful practices to create warm welcoming school communities. Culturally responsive practices for your schools and districts can make all the difference for these students and their families. You will have an opportunity to reflect on your school’s / district’s current practices and plan for your next steps.

Intake procedures and initial language proficiency assessments are essential to making the transition to a new school as smooth as possible and we will take some time to look at what schools and districts across the province are currently doing.

The afternoon will be an introduction to the Alberta K-12 ESL Proficiency Benchmarks including information on language acquisition and learning. The “benchmarks” are the beginning of the best possible ESL programming and assessment procedures for your ELLs and not just another form for your teachers to fill out!
