. . . the overall focus on competencies will shift education away from a process of disseminating information to a process of inquiry and discoveryInspiring Education, 2010, p. 26

This workshop will engage you in learning the principles for designing, assessing and managing standards-focused projects as well as using performance assessments to judge the relevant work generated by 21st century learners. Through a combination of direct instruction, video analysis and hands-on collaborative work, you will have the opportunity to plan, design and receive peer feedback on an engaging and rigorous project using the Buck Institute for Education (BIE) model and tools.

You will receive a copy of the PBL 101 Workbook, which includes rubrics, planning forms, protocols, activities, readings and sample projects.

You can also continue to receive support through the BIE forums and by participating in their biweekly webinars.

It is recommended that you bring any or all of the following to the session:

  • Provincial programs of study
  • Provincial, district or school planning calendars (including assessment calendars)
  • Provincial, district or school recommended reading lists
  • Provincial, district, school or personal curriculum materials (including assessment) that will assist you in planning a rigorous, relevant project

As well, it is recommended but not mandatory that you have a copy of the PBL Starter Kit (Grades 6-12) or PBL for Elementary Grades (K-5), which can be purchased at www.bie.org.
